Crushed

By Katherine Rhodes
You’ve got a chain around my heart,
And my heart wants to be free,
But it also almost likes its captivity
Because there’s something addicting about
Being crushed under your feet

Feeling like I’m nothing,
It’s exhilarating.
You’re an empty vase
And I’m flowers on the floor
I gave you all I had,
I have nothing anymore.
Of course you didn’t notice,
Can’t say that I’m surprised,
Because you can never seem
To look me in the eyes.
You’ve put a box around my brain,
And my brain wants to breathe,
But it also almost likes its captivity
Because there’s something addicting about
being crushed under your feet
feeling so confined,
it’s exhilarating.
She’s a bouquet of roses
And I’m flowers on the floor,
I gave you all I had,
Yet somehow she gave more.
Of course you didn’t notice
the tears that pricked my eyes
as you gave her what I wanted,
and I left without goodbyes.
I’ve got a key in my palm,
And the lock within my reach,
There are no doubts in my mind
That I want to be free.
Because there’s something dreadful about
Being crushed beneath your feet
Now my thoughts are rid of you,
It’s exhilarating.
You were a golden statue,
Now I’m picked up off the floor
And my safety-pinned heart
Works independently once more.
Of course, now I notice
That you’re just a teenage guy
Not my masterpiece now,
I’ve painted my own sky.
