I'd Like to Pick Up Painting

By Breia Gore

IF YOU MIX PAINTS JUST RIGHT
A BRAND NEW COLOR APPEARS.
AND ISN’T THAT JUST WHAT YOU WANTED?

YOU STOLE YOUR SISTER'S ACRYLIC PAINT SET
LATE AT NIGHT WHILE SHE WAS OVER AT MATT’S,
BECAUSE ISN’T THAT JUST WHAT YOU WANTED?
IF YOU MIX PAINTS JUST RIGHT
A BRAND NEW COLOR APPEARS.
AND ISN’T THAT JUST WHAT YOU WANTED?
AN INBETWEEN OF MIDNIGHT BLUE AND
INDIGO ON ALL THE FRIENDS
THAT GREW UP AND CHANGED AND LEFT YOU IN THE MOLD?
ISN’T THAT JUST WHAT YOU WANTED?
YOU BLENDED ALL THE SEASONS
YOU TRIED ALL THE SNIPS ON SPLIT-ENDS AND
FORGOT WHAT IT WAS THAT WAS IN THE MIRROR.
CLIMBING TREES TO FINDING HOMES UNDERGROUND,
YOUR OWN MOTHER COULD BARELY RECOGNIZE YOU.
FROM CLASSICAL SHEERS TO LEATHER,
IF YOU MIX PAINTS JUST RIGHT
A BRAND NEW COLOR APPEARS,
AND ISN’T THAT JUST WHAT YOU WANTED?
