7 Reasons Why You Should Watch Legend of the Blue Sea

1.        Mermaids! Mystical Ocean! Breath-taking sceneries!
Similar to Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, this series presents you with lots of, well— mermaids! Specifically, one that is willing to swim from Jeju Island to Seoul to be with a con artist.

You will get to see how Shim Cheong (Jun Ji-hyun) swims with her mesmerizing tail under the Palau sea while still keeping a naturally expressive face. Her basic understanding of how the modern world works is ridiculously funny, too!

It is based on an Eou Yadam story set in the Joseon era— about a civil officer who freed a mermaid caught by a fisherman. So, expect many conflicts, twists and turns, and underwater beauties!

If you’re a Jon Snow fanatic, this might pique your interest: some of the scenes were filmed in Girona, Spain, where Game of Thrones filmed last year.

You will also get to see the beautiful Tower of Hercules and many more enchanting sights from other countries!

2.        It shows that the mind forgets but the heart doesn’t.

This series reminds viewers that the ones who genuinely and truly love(d) us never really forget about us completely. Our essence is in their hearts— mermaids’ memory-erasing power can’t wash that away!
3.        It represents diverse friendships!

Shim Cheong never really cares who she hangs out or befriends with— whether it’s an ajumma (middle-aged woman), a geoji (a “beggar”) or a dongsaeng (young person).

It doesn’t matter if you’re a first grader or a homeless, philosophical fashionista who doesn’t eat food that was cooked more than two hours ago. She reminds us that any support from a friend is worth more than any pearl.

4.        See interesting snippets of how genius hackers and con-artists work.

You’ll see how the Con-Artist Trio— Heo Joon-jae (Lee Min-ho), the genius con-artist who can trick cops into believing that a prison is a garden, Nam-doo (Lee Hee-joon), the highly skilled, sociable, con-artist who can deceive both the fictional characters and the viewers, and Tae-oh (Shin Won-ho), the quiet, genius, flower boy hacker who can unlock doors in 2 seconds— skillfully steal from the corrupt elites. Their operations and acting skills seem tangible enough to be used as future references “IRL” because of how well they are executed.
Kidding! Don’t steal, though!

5.     History! Time! Destiny! Reincarnation!

Get a glimpse of how this series depicts ancient people’s lifestyle in the Joseon period. It also exemplifies how simple life could be back then, with an additional magical twist! And if you’re into past lives being reincarnated in the modern world, this is for you! The two destined lovers witness their current lives parallel their past lives.

6.     It showcases some great clothes! Talk about fashion!

Undoubtedly one of the most stylish mermaids, Shim Cheong is perhaps one of the few who’s fated to be forever chic. Be it on the land or in the sea, in the current or in the past life— because who fishes out Lanvin, Miu Miu and Dolce and Gabbana in the trash can coincidentally? From Stella McCartney to Celine, this gorgeous woman never runs out of style!

Definitely one of the most remarkable lines in Korean drama, Lee Min Ho’s “dirsgusting” line got many Kdrama viewers guffawing! If you’re ever feeling down, watching that particular scene may lift your head out of the water.
