How to Go Vegan

Being vegan isn’t as hard as it may seem. I’ve been a vegetarian my whole life, much like most of my family. We’re vegetarians because we are Hindus. But we also choose to be vegetarian because we think the way animals are killed in slaughterhouses is inhumane and evil. At the beginning of the year, I tried to slowly become vegan. It was hard for my mom because she was worried I wouldn’t get enough calcium. I decided that since I’m lactose intolerant, it would be better for me to be a vegan than a vegetarian. Even though it’s easier to be vegan in a big city, I’ve learned different ways to work around it here in my small town. So, here are some  of my tips and tricks.

Tips & Tricks

  1. Protein: Eat lentils, beans, nuts, quinoa
Trick: When you are eating out, try to go to places where there are Mexican or Indian food—these foods typical have lentils and beans.

2. Healthy Fats & Omegas: Eat avocado, walnuts
Trick: You need to buy omega and flaxseed oil or pills, because people who eat meat get these nutrients from fish. You can find these products just about anywhere.

3. Calcium: Eat almonds, kale, oranges, broccoli, and Brazil nuts
Trick: If you still want to drink milk, you can have soy or almond milk—however, these products have no calcium, so you’ll have to make sure you get it from other foods.

4. Greens: Eat spinach, kale, collard greens, arugula, and Swiss chard.

5. Make sure to ALWAYS read the ingredients. You never know what could be in your food!

6. Use apps! Is It Vegan and Animal-Free are really good apps that I use.

Foods That You Can Quickly Whip Up

  1. Salad. Even though everyone says this one, I had to include it because it’s easy, fast, and simple.

  1. Oatmeal. Use almond or soy milk, and then put nuts and fruits in it.

  1. Nacho chips with vegetables and cheese. It’s like the kind of food you would find at Moe’s!

  1. Quesadilla. Use some cheese, black beans, and vegetables.
