Concert Culture

Your heart is pumping in your chest. Your stomach is flipping over with excitement. Your voice is hoarse for days due to excessive screaming. The feeling of elation overcomes you the second you lay eyes on the person you’ve been waiting days, months, years to see. The feeling of sadness overwhelms you for the weeks that follow after you experienced what could have been the best night of your life. Concerts are one of the biggest joys in life.

Chances are, if you love a musician, you will try with everything in your being to see that person live. Whether you camp outside the venue for hours before the show to be as close as you can, or end up getting seats as far away as possible, you will fight to see that person. As someone who loves music more than anything, I know the feeling. I have experienced both ends of the spectrum, too. I have been as far back as you can get, struggling to even get a glimpse of the person I have paid to see, standing among parents and children who are only there because they like the few popular songs this person has. I have also been pressed against the barricade, elbows out and ready if anyone tried to push past me. I have waited for hours outside of venus in intense heat and freezing weather. I have endured it all, and each time I have the best night of my life. Concerts are an opportunity to escape, to forget everything that is burdening your life at the moment. Concerts introduce you to new people from all walks of life and are some of the greatest people you can meet. Concert friends are some of the best people you can meet; the bonds you can make with some of these people are irreplaceable.

For me, the best part of concerts is when you get a bit of personal interaction with those performing, even if it is just with the opening act you’ve never heard of before. In February, I camped outside for seven hours to see BØRNS, and I waited through snow, rain, and freezing temperatures. Once we were finally let inside the venue, we luckily were right against the barricade, holding on so no one pushed us out of the spot we deserved. As we waited, we were desperate for the opening acts to pass quickly so we could finally see who we had been waiting for. I was utterly surprised when I fell in love with the two opening acts, Mikky Ekko and Charlotte Cardin. The only information I knew about either of them was that Mikky Ekko had a popular song with Rihanna. Mikky blew me away, though. His songs were catchy, and his performance was exhilarating. During his performance, he jumped into the pit on my side and almost took my friend down. He stood right next to me and held my hand as I helped him over the barricade, and I attempted to sing with him even though I had never heard the song before. As he was leaving his set, he walked past our section, and as I held my hand out, he grabbed it and gave it a kiss. I was in awe for the rest of the night. Charlotte Cardin, the second opening act, did not disappoint either. She was beautiful and breathtaking, and her songs are now some of my favorites. Finally, after nine hours of waiting, I was ready for the reason I was there: BØRNS. He was beautiful and easily one of the best performers I have ever seen. His interaction with the audience was stunning, too, taking bouquets from fans and continuing to use the flowers throughout his set. We were his last stop on tour, and he made us know it. He performed with such grace and energy. I can confidently say this concert was the best I have ever attended. Ever.

Concerts have given me some of the best moments I have ever had in my entire life. I have met some genuinely amazing people, and I always call them the best time of my life. They’re such a sacred time for me, and I honestly don’t know what my life would be like without them.
