Poignant Portraits

For the Pride issue, I chose to photograph myself.  When I think of something I take pride in, I think of how far I’ve come and how I’m proud of who I am now. Growing up was not easy for me, as with most people, as it was filled with acres of self-hatred and mistreatment.  Those years will impact me for the rest of my life.  The concept of overcoming that and being proud of my imperfections is a concept 13-year-old me could never have grasped.

In my work, and in this series, I hope to convey that I feel beautiful and ethereal. I hope by photographing myself in an empowering way, it can show other young people that they, too, are worthy of taking pride in themselves.
